Energy Based Home Repair

West Kentucky Allied Services (WKAS) Weatherization Program reduces energy costs for low-income families by improving the energy efficiency of their homes, while also assessing and eliminating related health and safety issues. The program is funded with federal dollars from the United States Department of Energy and Health and Human Services. Funds are administered by Community Action of Kentucky and Kentucky Housing Corporation. WKAS completes a site-specific energy audit that includes blower-door-directed air leakage diagnostics, heating system safety and efficiency diagnostics, duct leakage diagnostics, and insulation needs. Following the energy audit, the program provides repairs and improvements to home heating and cooling systems and provides for the installation of energy-saving measures in the house, such as improved insulation and air sealing. WKAS Weatherization Services are for low-income families, particularly for households that have elderly persons, individuals with disabilities, and families with children.

Home Performance

Home Performance is best described as how different components of your home operate together as a system to create a comfortable, durable, healthy, and energy-efficient space. It all starts with the building envelope, or the shell of the living area. An energy-efficient home has a well-sealed and well-insulated building envelope, meaning very little air moves between the inside and the outside, and heat cannot easily move through walls, windows, doors, and ceilings.
Next come the heating and cooling appliances, as they often account for as much as half of your total energy consumption. Appliances that operate efficiently, are well-maintained and properly sized are essential for overall home performance. Having well-sealed and insulated duct work is also critical- otherwise you are losing the air you just paid to condition into the basement or attic!
Other appliances such as water heaters, refrigerators, washers, and dryers account for an additional 15-25% of total energy use, so it’s recommended to use high-efficiency, Energy Star-rated appliances to minimize energy and water use and ensure that any settings are appropriately adjusted. Finally, lighting and other appliances such as computers and TVs make up the remainder of your energy use. Switching to energy-efficient light bulbs such as CFLs or LEDs makes a big difference, and ensuring that minor appliances are turned off or unplugged when not in use is a great way to shave dollars off your utility bill.

How Do We Assess Home Performance?

The best way to determine how a home is performing is with a comprehensive energy audit. An energy audit takes a highly scientific and data-driven approach to determining exactly how your home is using – and wasting – energy. Energy auditors use high-tech equipment to evaluate your home, then use sophisticated computer modeling to produce a detailed report and recommended work scope to address any problems identified in the audit. The report even projects how much each measure costs and how much energy you will save as a result, providing you with an accurate estimate for financial payback. Most importantly, an energy audit discovers invisible health and safety issues such as mold and carbon monoxide that could harm your family.

  • A blower door test measures the leakiness of your home, known as “infiltration.” By depressurizing the home with a blower door, energy auditors can pinpoint the overall leakiness of the building as well as the exact locations of substantial air loss. This helps prioritize air sealing locations in the retrofit phase.
  • A thorough building envelope inspection evaluates the quality and effectiveness of insulation, windows, and doors. Using infrared cameras, an auditor can see what the naked eye can’t: areas in the walls and ceilings where heat escapes.
  • HVAC inspections test the efficiency and safety of your heating and cooling appliances. A combustion appliance safety test will ensure your gas or oil appliances aren’t spilling dangerous fumes back into the house, and the auditor can determine if your furnace or heat pump needs a repair or tune up.
  • Lighting and appliance inventories allow the auditor to calculate how much energy your bulbs and appliances are using and make common sense, cost-effective recommendations for upgrades.

Weatherization works for Western Kentucky!

Since 1976 WKAS has delivered weatherization services to an average of 50 households annually in the 8 county region of Western Kentucky that includes Ballard, Calloway, Carlisle, Fulton, Graves, Marshall and McCracken County.

WKAS partners with Community Action of Kentucky, Kentucky Housing Corporation, Atmos Energy, Kentucky Utilities, the USDA, and the Tennessee Valley Authority to deliver energy efficiency services to more low incomed households each year.

Weatherization technicians use energy audits to determine which energy savings measures are cost-effective for each home. Highly trained and qualified installers are used to make much needed improvements. These energy efficiency improvements have resulted in an average annual energy savings of $725 per household based on current rates.

In addition to reducing energy costs, the measures installed through Weatherization also improve the overall Health and Safety of the occupants of each household served. Special emphasis is placed on indoor air quality and protection from carbon monoxide and other hazards that can be found homes.

The Weatherization Program creates jobs for energy professionals and private contractors, educates consumers about the importance of energy efficiency, decreases local energy demand, reduces power plant emissions, and creates an empowered community as it helps to reduce the nation’s dependence on imported oil.
